From Stipend to Startup: How Samofal DDD Has Spent Three Years Empowering Young Entrepreneurs in Puntland

A training certificate can open a door, but what happens next depends entirely on whether a young person can afford to step through it. Three years ago, Samofal DDD set out to bridge this critical gap with its Youth Microfinance Initiative—a program built to put flexible, accessible capital directly into the hands of driven young Somalis ready to build businesses of their own.

Today, three years into the journey, that vision has turned into tangible community impact: Samofal DDD has officially handed over $50,000 in micro-grants and small loans to promising youth entrepreneurs across the Nugaal Region.

Bridging the Gap Between Skills and Capital

Before this initiative, a recurring challenge emerged across Samofal DDD's programs: graduates of the Forest Guardians cycles, digital literacy workshops, and vocational trainings possessed genuine skills and ambition, but lacked the initial financial push needed to purchase equipment, secure workspace, or launch a product.

By integrating microfinance as a natural next step following skill training—rather than treating it as a separate program—the initiative has helped turn classroom knowledge into thriving local enterprises.

Fueling Green, Sustainable Businesses

From day one, the initiative was designed with sustainability at its core. Funding is specifically channeled toward eco-friendly and climate-resilient ventures, including:

• Agroforestry & Tree Nurseries: Small businesses that supply native seedlings and support local land rehabilitation.

• Green Service Enterprises: Local enterprises that generate reliable income without relying on environmentally harmful practices like charcoal production.

• Tech & Digital Services: Youth-led businesses offering digital solutions, remote support, and local services in Puntland regions.

By linking funding eligibility to sustainable business models, the initiative ensures that as the next generation of youth-led businesses grows, it strengthens the local economy without placing additional strain on an already fragile landscape.

Three Years of Proven Results

"Three years ago, we realized that skill was never the missing piece—it was that crucial first bit of capital," says a Samofal DDD program officer. "Now, having handed over $50,000 directly to these young innovators, we are seeing real businesses take root, employ others, and protect our environment all at once."
